MEC Meeting Minutes

The Medical Education Committee (MEC) is charged with overseeing the functioning of its subcommittees, ad-hoc task forces, and activities concerned with oversight and review of the undergraduate medical education curriculum and the components thereof. See the full MEC Bylaws.

The MEC has primary responsibility for curricular planning and oversight. In addition, the MEC serves as an information clearinghouse by which the Heersink School of Medicine faculty, students, and administrators are informed about curricular and educational activities at all four campuses and instructional sites.

Recommendations proposed by the MEC subcommittees must be forwarded to the MEC for review before being forwarded to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and to the Heersink School of Medicine Dean for final approval and implementation. The MEC can appoint task forces to investigate particular issues, and, on the basis of information provided by a task force, recommendations to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Dean may be made.

MEC membership consists of officers, faculty representatives, resident representatives, student representatives, and ex-officio members. Membership includes representatives from curriculum implementation and advisory groups such as the Module Directors Committee, Clerkship Directors Committee, Office of Undergraduate Medical Education, and Medical Student Services.

MEC Members

Voting faculty members serve three-year terms on the Medical Education Committee; student representatives serve four-year terms while residents/house staff serve a one-year term. Ex-offiio members are non-voting representatives. 

MEC Committees

As stated in its bylaws, the MEC has the responsibility of overseeing the function of subcommittees, task forces, and activities concerned with the undergraduate medical education curriculum and associated components. The MEC is comprised of subcommittees with specific members and responsibilities. See the MEC organizational chart.

  • Executive Committee

    The MEC Executive Committee is responsible for:

    • Coordinating efforts among subcommittees & task forces
    • Compiling & distributing outcomes data
    • Consulting & advising the Dean and Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education

     

    The MEC Executive Committee meets bimonthly beofre the full MEC meeting. Members include:

    • MEC Chair 
    • MEC Vice Chair
    • Preclinical Curriculum Subcommittee Chair
    • Clinical Curriculum Subcommittee Chair
    • Special Programs Subcommittee Chair
  • Preclinical Curriculum Subcommittee

    The Preclinical Curriculum Subcommittee is responsible for:

    • Reviewing and monitoring preclinical modules and providing recommendations
    • Promote integration among basic science disciplines & between basic and clinical sciences

     

    The subcommittee meets as needed. Members include:

    • Preclinical Subcommittee Chair
    • Preclinical module director
    • ICM course director
    • Clerkship director
    • At-large faculty representatives (2-4)
    • Student representatives (2-3)
  • Clinical Curriculum Subcommittee

    The Clinical Curriculum Subcommittee is responsible for:

    • Reviewing and monitoring ICM & junior and senior courses at all campuses and providing recommendations
    • Promoting integration between basic and clinical sciences

     

    The subcommittee meets as needed. Members include:

    • Clinical Subcommittee Chair
    • Module director
    • Clerkship director
    • At-large faculty representatives (4-6)
    • Student representatives (2-3)
  • Special Programs Subcommittee

    The Special Programs Subcommittee is responsible for:

    • Reviewing and monitoring UABSOM pathways/programs and make recommendations. Pathways/Programs include the Rural Programs, Dual Degree Programs, Scholarly Activity, and Learning Communities

     

    The subcommittee meets as needed. Members include:

    • Special Program Subcommittee Chair
    • Director of Scholarly Activity
    • At-large faculty representatives (3-5)
    • Student representatives (2-3)
    • Student MSTP representative
