About Our Department

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is dedicated to excellence in education, research, and patient care.

Our department advances patient care, surgical education, research, and innovation across the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Faculty, students, residents, and fellows work together to improve outcomes for patients with conditions affecting the face, jaws, mouth, head, and neck.

The department is recognized for strengths in trauma, orthognathic surgery, head and neck oncology, microvascular reconstruction, temporomandibular joint disorders, facial reconstruction, sleep surgery, and craniofacial care. Through clinical excellence, scholarly activity, and professional leadership, faculty contribute to advances that shape the future of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Faculty include nationally recognized educators, researchers, and surgeons whose work has helped advance the specialty through discovery, innovation, and service.

Education and Training

Our department contributes to the education of future dentists through classroom and clinical instruction while providing advanced specialty and fellowship training. Faculty mentor students, residents, and fellows in surgical care, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration across a broad range of oral and maxillofacial conditions.

We offer advanced education programs designed to meet the requirements of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Advanced training opportunities include the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program, the Head and Neck Oncology Fellowship Program, and the Orthognathic and Temporomandibular Joint Surgery Fellowship Program.
 
 

Specialized Learning Resources

Faculty, residents, and fellows have access to specialized learning resources through UAB Libraries, including specialty textbooks, journals, databases, board preparation materials, and literature search services.
 

Clinical Care

Faculty, residents, and fellows provide care across hospital, outpatient, and interdisciplinary practice settings, creating opportunities to manage complex surgical conditions while collaborating with specialists throughout the UAB Health System. Areas of clinical expertise include:
  • benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck region
  • facial deformities
  • reconstructive surgery of the face
  • restoration of the edentulous patients
  • implants
  • extensive facial infections
  • extraction of teeth and impacted wisdom teeth
  • laser surgery
  • management of TMJ disorders
  • facial pain and trauma
  • facial cosmetic surgery
  • obstructive sleep apnea
These clinical environments support advanced patient care while providing broad educational opportunities for students, residents, and fellows across the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Full-time faculty may also have opportunities to participate in faculty practice through UAB Medicine affiliated clinical settings, integrating patient care with education, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
 

Research and Scholarly Activity

Faculty conduct basic, translational, and clinical research that advances the understanding and treatment of conditions affecting the craniofacial complex, head and neck region, and maxillofacial skeleton.
