UAB Radio Paging works with UAB departments and other authorized groups that need end-user communications equipment. It:
- determines what equipment and frequency/channel is most appropriate
- provides quotes for pagers, two-way radios, and Southern Linc devices
- obtains equipment including pagers, two-way radios, and Southern Linc devices
- provides programming, setup, and maintenance
- administers tracking and management of devices
- decommissions outdated or failed equipment
Once equipment is issued, the group receiving it is responsible for accounting for it and guaranteeing its use within UAB guidelines and specifications.

Operating Requirements
- Do not alter the equipment issued by Radio Paging. If updating or changes are needed, contact Radio Paging..
- Avoid using improper language (for example swearing or harsh language) when using pagers and two-way radio equipment.
- Limit conversations about non-work issues to prevent interference with critical communications.
Each department is encouraged to develop guidelines concerning equipment use to enhance existing Radio Paging and UAB policies. Radio Paging can develop guidelines that meet UAB and FCC policies and support department needs.
Failure to follow acceptable communications procedures could result in the loss of equipment use.
Message Retention
UAB is committed to protecting the delivery of all critical messaging. This includes the safe retention of these messages, their corresponding records, and their eventual safe and secure deletion.
It is Radio Paging’s intent to retain this information for three years from the date the message is sent through the in-house paging system. Authorized subscribers can request transcripts/copies of this information if it is available.
Damaged/Malfunctioning Equipment
Damaged or malfunctioning equipment issued by Radio Paging should be returned to the department for possible repair or replacement.
If it is determined the equipment has been exposed to misuse or intentional damage a repair or replacement cost may occur.
How to Return Equipment
Any UAB department/group or outside contracted organization with unneeded equipment is required to return the equipment directly to Radio Paging’s office along with a completed pager termination form. See Pager Termination Form below under Documentation Up to five pagers can be listed on one form.
If the pager’s assigned user is no longer employed at UAB, the immediate supervisor (or their delegate) must ensure the return of the equipment and the filing of the form.
See Lost Equipment for guidance on misplaced pagers.
Lost Equipment
While not ideal, losing a device does happen. Departments should report any lost Radio Paging issued equipment to the Radio Paging Department immediately.
If a pager cannot be located, a pager termination form must be filled out and emailed, faxed to Radio Paging. See Pager Termination Form below under Documentation. There is a $100 lost equipment fee for each missing pager. Fees will be charged to the subscriber’s billing account.
If a lost pager is found later, it can be turned in along with a revised Pager Termination Form. The lost equipment fee will be refunded unless there is significant damage to the pager. In that case a damaged equipment fee may be charged.
