Benjamin Wei, M.D., a professor in the UAB Department of Surgery and the program director of the UAB Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency in the UAB Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Charles W. Breaux, Sr. and Ann K. Breaux Endowed Professorship in Cardiothoracic Surgery. This endowed professorship was established to recognize and support exemplary faculty who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to advancing the field of cardiothoracic surgery through clinical excellence, academic achievement and service to the institution. Appointment to an endowed chair or professorship stands as the pinnacle of recognition for a faculty member, symbolizing their exceptional accomplishments and securing resources for their future scholarly endeavors. 

Wei is widely recognized for his clinical expertise and his dedication to advancing minimally invasive and robotic techniques in thoracic surgery. As program director of the UAB Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency, he has played a pivotal role in mentoring the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons and enhancing the program’s national reputation. His research contributions, commitment to academic scholarship, and consistently high standards of patient care embody the values celebrated by the Breaux Endowed Professorship.
