The UAB Department of Surgery welcomes two new faculty members, Margaret Romine, M.D., and Matthew Romine, M.D., who both completed their surgical residencies and fellowships at UAB.
“It is a special honor to welcome back Margaret and Matthew to UAB at this stage of their careers,” said Herbert Chen, M.D., Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair of the Department of Surgery. “They were both exemplary leaders while at UAB during their training, have been successful in the current faculty roles, and we know they’ll continue to excel and make a lasting impact as UAB faculty members.”
About Dr. Margaret Romine
Dr. Margaret Romine joins Department of Surgery as an assistant professor in the Division of Transplantation.
After receiving a Master of Science from the Department of Infectious Diseases from the University of Georgia, Dr. Romine attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. Following medical school, she attended UAB for the General Surgery Residency Program and for the Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship. After training, Dr. Romine was hired at East Carolina University (ECU) / ECU Health as an assistant professor, where she was the director of living donation and the co-director of the surgical clerkship program at ECU.
Dr. Romine is involved in a variety of efforts to enhance living kidney donation and access to kidney transplantation. She is also interested in optimizing the use of high Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) organs to improve organ utilization as well as reexamine the approach to kidney transplantation in the setting of prostate cancer.
About Dr. Matthew Romine
Dr. Matthew Romine will be serving as an assistant professor in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery.
After attending medical school at the Medical College of Georgia, Dr. Romine attended UAB for the General Surgery Residency Program, followed by additional training as a fellow in the Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship program at UAB. Upon graduation, he served as a general surgeon at East Carolina University (ECU) / ECU Health. Dr. Romine is interested in laparoscopic and robotic minimally invasive general surgery, including foregut, bariatric surgery, and complex abdominal wall hernias.
