UAB General Surgery Residency hosted its annual Resident Research Day on April 14, 2025.
Assistant Program Director for Resident Research Karin Hardiman, M.D., Ph.D., welcomed attendees and served as the event’s moderator. Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery Assistant Professor Bhuwan Giri, M.B.B.S., and Division of Pediatric Surgery Assistant Professor Laura Stafman M.D., Ph.D., attended the day’s proceedings and assisted in the selection of awardees. Visiting residents from the University of Wisconsin, Baylor University, and Northwestern University were also invited to participate.
The event featured multiple categories of projects, including: basic/translational research, outcomes/Health Services Research, education research, quality improvement research, and global research.
A total of 18 surgical residents from UAB presented their projects, and four were recognized with awards.
This year’s award recipients were:
● Wendelyn Oslock, M.D., MBA - Outstanding Clinical Science Research
● Angela Sickels, M.D. - Outstanding Clinical Science Research
● Madhushree Zope, M.D. - Outstanding Clinical Science Research
● Tejeshwar Jain, M.D. - Tyler and Brooke Wahl Resident Research Award for the Most Outstanding Presentation

The UAB General Surgery Residency Research Day is an annual scientific forum where residents from across the program present their research projects and engage in discussions with faculty members and experts in the field.
UAB’s General Surgery Residency provides residents with clinical experience at a high-volume, level-one hospital. Resident training is enhanced with a variety of unique opportunities to develop as a surgeon and an academic physician, including research participation, extensive robotic surgery training, international training opportunities, and more.
