The UAB Department of Surgery has launched a new wellness initiative, through YogaLab Birmingham, to offer free yoga classes to faculty, residents, and staff through the end of October. This effort is part of the department’s broader commitment to fostering a culture of well-being and community.
Since the program began in early August, participants have already logged more than 30 hours of yoga, with positive feedback from across the department. Classes are held at YogaLab’s downtown studio, where mats, towels, and showers are provided. Instructors offer modifications to ensure accessibility for all skill levels, making the program welcoming to both beginners and experienced practitioners.
“I am extremely thankful for the provision that has been put in place by the Department of Surgery for me to be able to take care of 'me' through yoga,” said Toria Pettway, LMSW, psychiatric social worker in the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. “It was an awesome experience that greatly improved my mood and reduced my stress levels, and I encourage all of those in the department to take advantage of this amazing opportunity." This initiative was developed led by UAB Surgery Wellness Committee Director Kimberly Kopecky, M.D., an assistant professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology, along with support from the leadership of the UAB Department of Surgery.
“We are excited to see so many members of our department engaging with this opportunity,” said Kopecky. “Wellness is vital to our success both in and out of work, and we hope programs like this continue to grow.”
“Yoga has been a meaningful way to maintain balance between work, school, and whatever life brings,” said Amber Taylor, a clinical research regulatory coordinator in the Division of Surgical Oncology. “I’ve enjoyed inviting friends and using this time to reconnect with them and myself. I’m thankful to the department for providing an opportunity to slow down, recharge, and nurture personal wellness.”
