Clinical Research

Clinical research is central to the mission of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.

Through rigorous scientific investigation, our faculty seek to advance understanding of perioperative disease mechanisms, develop and evaluate new treatments for patient ailments, and improve  outcomes and quality of life lives for our perioperative patients.

Our department carries out a variety of clinical research including, but not limited to: randomized-controlled trials, industry sponsored clinical trials, local, national, and international surveys, grant-based studies (e.g., PCORI, NIH, etc.), retrospective trials, prospective observational studies (including biosamples collection), outcomes and health services research, and large-scale big data investigations. Together, these efforts support evidence-based perioperative care and continuous improvement across the surgical continuum.

We collaborate with many other UAB academic and clinical departments and entities, including the Schools of Health-Related Professions, Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Informatics and Public Health, to accomplish the Department’s mission.

As part of the journey through clinical research, we have created a “Research Circle” that faculty / principal investigators (novice and experienced) can follow to achieve their clinical research goals. We provide faculty with full-lifecycle support across all phases of clinical research. This includes mentorship and guidance during study conception, design, and operationalization; regulatory support: study related IRB, DUA, and OSP submissions; and hands-on support for data collection, data entry, and biospecimen collection, including phlebotomy. The division also assists investigators with study execution, abstract preparation, and manuscript development and submission, ensuring continuity and momentum from project initiation through dissemination of results.
