The Essentials of Teaching program is a cohort-based professional development experience designed to support new UAB faculty members as they build a strong foundation in effective, research-informed teaching practices. Chair-nominated participants join a learning community that spans classroom and clinical teaching contexts, creating space for collaboration, reflection, and shared growth.
Over the course of the academic year, faculty engage in two half-day meetings in the fall and two in the spring, exploring high-impact teaching strategies that enhance student learning and support meaningful instructional design. The program focuses on the AAC&U High Impact Practices, helping participants apply evidence-based approaches that elevate student engagement across disciplines.
Led by Executive Director Amy Chatham, Associate Director Melissa Hawkins, and supported by representatives of other service units on campus, the program connects new faculty with a robust network of UAB resources dedicated to supporting innovation and excellence in instruction.
Whether participants are entering the classroom for the first time or refining established teaching approaches, Essentials of Teaching offers the structure, community, and guidance needed to grow as an educator and provide high-quality learning experiences for all students. New cohorts begin in the Fall semester annually. Calls for nomination are sent to all chairs in July/August.
