Elizabeth Makrokanis began dancing competitively at a young age, and continued studio training in Northern Virginia until leaving for college at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. While at Emory, she was a principal dancer in the University's Dance Company and captain/chief choreographer of the Emory Eagles Dance Team. She graduated from Emory University with a Major in Political Science and a Minor in Dance.
She has performed at many DC area venues including the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap, and taught advanced competition-level classes in tap, jazz, musical theatre, and contemporary lyrical for close to two decades. She is routinely hired and invited as a guest choreographer and master class teacher, she judges on the national dance competition circuit, and has been in roles such as Department Director and Artistic Director at renowned studios in the DC metro area for the past decade. She has won numerous awards for her choreography and coaching around the country.
Elizabeth has continued her professional education with training and certifications through the Dance Masters of America (DMA), and is a member of DMA certified by exam to teach all levels of Tap, Jazz, Ballet, and Modern.
She and her family have recently relocated to Birmingham, Alabama and she teaches and choreographs for numerous studios in Birmingham, Hoover, and Mt. Laurel. She is very excited to be joining the faculty at UAB, teaching Jazz. Elizabeth lives in the Greystone area with her husband, two sons and daughter (all three dance!), and three fur babies.
