Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre, the Department of Theatre at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is dedicated to developing the next generation of performers, designers, creators, teachers, and citizens. With the expertise of full-time faculty members and professional production specialists, the department offers:
- a BFA in Musical Theatre
- a BA in Theatre with concentration options in Performance, Design/Technology, and General Theatre
- a minor in Theatre
A Vibrant Theatre Community
The Department of Theatre is located in the Magic City: Birmingham -- Alabama’s largest city and home to nationally-recognized dining and world-class attractions. Birmingham’s various theatrical venues such as the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center and the Alabama Theatre attract major concert and theatre tours. And local theatres in the Birmingham area range from small community theatres to professional companies that hire and produce year-round. UAB Theatre is proud to co-produce a musical each Spring in partnership with Red Mountain Theatre.

Performing On-Campus and Around the State
The department funds 5 fully-mounted productions each year and supports 4 touring companies who perform throughout Alabama. In addition, the department also produces short films, student showcases, and directing projects.
Since 1971, the department has produced more than 200 full-length productions and, with very rare exceptions, our plays are cast entirely from the student body. Students who demonstrate exceptional ability are frequently allowed to design and even direct our main-season productions.
