Dr. Yolanda Cal brings 20 years of advertising education and integrated marketing communications experience to UAB. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in advertising, public relations, marketing, creative strategy, and speech communication, and has advised student teams competing in regional and national advertising campaign competitions. Her research examines multicultural marketing and the roles of women and minorities in advertising and public relations leadership. At the University of Texas at Austin, she received the Ray T. Hall Scholarship for creativity.
Beyond academia, she has worked in strategic marketing, public relations, and event management for regional and international clients, including developing a communications strategy for a USAID consultancy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She also led a study-abroad program in Berlin, Germany, where students explored European advertising and public relations.
Whether teaching face-to-face or online, Dr. Cal emphasizes the fundamentals of effective communication: writing, storytelling, collaboration, and presentation. She believes strong oral and written communication skills are essential to students' academic achievement and future career success, and she is committed to providing relevant, practical, and up-to-date instruction that prepares students to communicate with confidence.
