The McWane Biology Student in Residence program is a partnership between McWane Science Center and the UAB Department of Biology. Students in Residence participate in experiential learning through projects at McWane related to a variety of biology-related career skills including scientific collections, science communications, STEM education, or husbandry of living collections. The McWane Biology Student in Residence program provides a unique opportunity to:
- earn UAB Biology course credit
- build your CV/resume
- gain professional experience in biology-related fields
- apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations
Examples of Positions for Students in Residence

| Scientific Collections Assistant (Invertebrates) | Collections | 1 | Catalog, digitize, and curate fossil and living invertebrate specimens while gaining museum collections experience. |
| Scientific Collections Assistant (Fishes) | Collections | 1 | Assist with fish specimen identification, dissection, documentation, and tissue collection for scientific projects. |
| Science Communications Specialist | Marketing | 1 | Develop science-focused content for websites, social media, newsletters, and public outreach initiatives. |
| Animal Science Facilitator | Education | 3 | Care for animal ambassadors and engage museum visitors through educational programs and exhibit interpretation. |
| Aquarist Assistant | World of Water | 3 | Support aquatic animal care, habitat maintenance, feeding, and aquarium operations. |

Application Criteria
- UAB Biology ABM Plan II, UAB Biology Masters Plan II, or UAB Biology junior or senior undergraduate student
- Transfer students must have 36 hours in residence at UAB
- 3.5 overall GPA
- Ability to commit sequential semesters to the program (can count towards 6 credits of BY 698 or a combination of 6 credits of BY 398/481)
