The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) has awarded nearly $200,000 to Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy Brooks Wingo, PhD, FACRM, for the study, “Understanding the Impact of Meal Timing on Neurological Health in Adults with Multiple Sclerosis.” The project extends a previous pilot study in which time-restricted eating (TRE) was found to be feasible for adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) and showed potential benefits for physical and cognitive function.
The new study will examine potential mechanisms underlying these effects. Investigators will assess circadian gene expression and biomarkers related to neuronal health and inflammation and conduct PET imaging with a subset of participants.
These data are expected to contribute to one of the first examinations of neurological responses to TRE in individuals with MS. Findings will be used to inform the design of a future large-scale clinical trial evaluating TRE as a possible dietary intervention to support neurological and functional outcomes in MS.
