
The Nu at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) is a prestigious academic and professional organization that recognizes excellence in nursing scholarship, leadership, and service. The chapter represents a collaborative partnership between the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, Tuskegee University and UAB Hospital.
Nu at-Large is part of a global community of nurses dedicated to advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Our chapter brings together nurse leaders, scholars, and students who are committed to transforming healthcare through evidence-based practice, innovation, and lifelong learning.

History
Founded in 1922 by six nursing students, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) has more than 100,000 active members and 600 chapters at institutions of higher education and healthcare partners from Armenia, Australia, and Botswana to Thailand, the United States, and Wales. Sigma members include clinical nurses and administrators, academic nurse educators and researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and others working to fulfill the organization’s vision of connected, empowered nurse leaders transforming global healthcare.

Nu at-Large Chapter Membership
Students
Students are invited to join Sigma through one of the more than 500 chapters located at colleges and universities around the world.
Undergraduate Students:
- Are enrolled in a bachelor’s nursing program or equivalent
- Achieve academic excellence based on set criteria
- Are ranked in the highest 35 percent of their nursing class
- Have completed one-half of the nursing curriculum
- RN to BSN students must have completed 12 credit hours
Graduate Students:
- Have completed one-fourth of the nursing curriculum
- Achieve academic excellence based on set criteria
- Meet the expectation of academic integrity
Nurse Leaders
No matter where you are in your nursing career, if you meet the criteria for consideration and are a current or retired nursing professional, or a student in a post-licensure graduate program you may apply to join as a Nurse Leader.
An applicant must meet the following criteria for consideration for membership as a Nurse Leader.
- Be a registered nurse, legally recognized to practice in his/her country
- Have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in any field
- Have demonstrated achievement in nursing in one of the following areas:
- Scholarship
- Leadership
- Service
