Weekly Interdisciplinary Conference Schedule
Schedule of the conferences attended by the residents, fellows, and faculty throughout department.

Noon Conference Lecture Series
A series of didactic lectures are held daily at noon by members of our faculty. These lectures are recorded daily and archived so that they can be viewed live or at a later date by our residents. A two-year curriculum is followed so that all areas of radiology are adequately covered in accordance with the ABR blueprints. Noon conference is followed by an interactive, hot seat type case conference.

Interventional Radiology Conferences

In addition to our daily noon didactic sessions, the Interventional Radiology residency includes several focused conferences and educational opportunities throughout the week. Morning Report is held each weekday and centers on patient workups, clinical care issues, and procedure planning.

Tuesday mornings follow a rotating schedule: the 1st Tuesday is dedicated to Residency Essentials, while the 3rd Tuesday hosts various key meetings depending on the month—PEC in August and January, Resident Feedback in September, October, February, and April, and CCC in November and May. All other Tuesdays are reserved for Case Conference, where recent cases are reviewed with an emphasis on procedural technique, clinical decision-making, and outcomes.

Wednesday mornings include a variety of specialized sessions. The 1st Wednesday features the IO Conference. The 2nd Wednesday includes both the Chief Conference (resident-only) and the Faculty Meeting. The 3rd Wednesday offers a Hands-On Workshop, and the 4th Wednesday is reserved for the Portal Hypertension Conference. Any remaining Wednesdays are used for Case Conference.

On Thursday mornings, we continue our structured IR Didactic Lecture Series, part of our two-year rotating curriculum. The 1st Thursday is set aside for Residency Essentials, and the 2nd Thursday includes a core IR didactic session. The 3rd Thursday may include either Journal Club (September, January, May) or Guest Lectures. The 4th Thursday is reserved for our Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) Conference, during which residents present a root cause analysis of selected complications.

We also host Monthly Teaching Sessions, bringing together faculty, fellows, and residents to review IR-focused texts and peer-reviewed literature for discussion and debate.

Physics Lecture Series
Our Physics Department conduct several focused workshops and lectures for radiology residents throughout the year. Their courses cover introductory radiological physics, the principles of ultrasound, CT and MRI, digital and computer instrumentation, and radionuclide imaging.

Business & Leadership Curriculum
We provide dedicated lectures throughout the year focusing on business and leadership. This year we are utilizing the Leadership Essentials program through the American College of Radiology. This program provides impactful training for residents in the leadership and non-interpretive skills most relevant to early career success. We also have lectures that are given by faculty from UAB Collat School of Business. Topics of discussion include personal finance, hospital administration, medical malpractice and risk management, job interviewing and contracts, critical thinking, quality and ethics.

RSNA Patient Centered Care in Radiology national curriculum
RSNA has developed a curriculum of interactive patient-centered care learning modules designed for diagnostic and integrated interventional radiology programs that focus on the basics of patient-centered care, empathy/cultural awareness, communication, safety and teamwork. These sessions are reviewed in small group settings and involved interactive team based learning.

Barfield-Carter Lecture Series and Grand Rounds
Melson Barfield-Carter, M.D. served as the first chair of the UAB Department of Radiology from 1945-1955. She was both the first woman department chair and the first woman professor at the Medical College of Alabama. We invite an outstanding female radiologist speak to our department each year for the Barfield-Carter Lecture Series. We also have leaders in the field of radiology speak at Grand Rounds several times throughout the year.

Journal Club
Journal Club is held every month and overseen by a rotating faculty member, who chooses the 3-4 articles discussed by the residents. Typically, food and/or dessert are provided at Journal Club.

Quality Case Review
Every three months, our department has the Quality Case Review where we review quality cases and quality issues affecting patient care. This conference is attended by residents and faculty.
