Welcome to UAB! Our program offers a uniquely rich training environment, serving as both a Level I trauma center and home to the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, providing residents with exposure to high-acuity trauma cases as well as complex oncologic imaging, building strong clinical judgment and interpretive skills.
Our program follows a structured four-year curriculum that progresses from fundamental diagnostic imaging to advanced studies and procedures across diverse modalities. Call responsibilities are introduced in stages, giving residents the opportunity to take on increasing levels of autonomy while maintaining strong mentorship and support. This integrated approach ensures graduates are well-prepared for any career path, whether in private practice or in academic radiology. In addition, residents may tailor their training through specialized pathways, including the Clinician Educator, Research, Informatics, and Global Radiology tracks, enabling them to shape their education around their interests and long-term career goals. A defining strength of our program is the collegial culture between residents and faculty. Attendings create an approachable, supportive environment that encourages curiosity, collaboration, and growth, while ensuring residents feel valued as integral members of the team.
“Growing up in Birmingham and attending UAB for medical school, I have had a front row seat to the impact that UAB has on the surrounding community. I wanted to stay here for residency not only because of the amazing faculty, staff, and trainees in the department but also because of the atmosphere throughout the entire healthcare system. This is a place that cares about patients and cares about providers, and I have loved my time here as a medical student and resident.” – Grant Smith, M.D., Diagnostic Radiology Chief Resident
"After spending several years on the East Coast, deciding to move to Birmingham for residency was a major decision. My interview with the UAB Radiology Residency made that choice clear; the warmth among residents and the collegial spirit of the attendings came through even in the virtual setting. Since arriving, I have felt at home in this supportive environment, where collaboration between faculty and trainees truly stands out. From the start, the program has encouraged my interests in education, research, and leadership. Over time, it has become clear that this sense of camaraderie is woven into the culture that defines UAB as a whole.” – Moozhan Nikpanah, M.D., Diagnostic Radiology Chief Resident
