Applicants will have 72 hours to respond to an interview invitation. After that time, we will release the interview slot to another applicant.

Interview Format and Details

All residency interviews will be conducted virtually for the 2025-2026 recruitment season, as based on guidance from the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Our interview day begins at 8:00am Central Time. All applicants will participate in informational presentations and meetings with program leadership from 8:00-10:00am. Applicants are then split into two even groups with individual interviews scheduled either 10:00am-12:00pm or 1:00-3:00pm, with a 15-minute wrap-up at the end of each individual interview block. Applicants will be assigned to morning or afternoon interview groups one week prior to the interview date.

Chief Residents host a virtual social hour on the evening prior to the interview. Attendance at this event is not required to be considered for a position, but we hope that applicants are able to attend, as this is a fun opportunity to get to know our residents in a casual setting.

Program Signaling

Our program has opted into program signaling for the 2025 ERAS®️ season. However, program signaling and/or selection of geographic preferences are not required to be selected for an interview.

Apply for the Research Track

Recruitment

We have established two complementary avenues to recruit candidates for our research track:

  1. Direct Application to the Research Track: Medical students interested in pursuing a research-oriented career may apply directly to the research track in addition to the general psychiatry residency program. We have created a separate NRMP Program code (1007400C1) specifically for applicants seeking consideration for the research track. Successful applicants typically have demonstrated a strong commitment to a physician-scientist career through prior research experience.

  2. Identification of Candidates During PGY1 Year: We also identify promising candidates during the PGY1 year of their general psychiatry residency training. This pathway allows us to recognize residents who may have less extensive research experience but are interested in transitioning to a research-focused career. Supporting research training for psychiatry residents without a dual M.D./Ph.D. background is essential for diversifying the physician-scientist workforce, as only about half of physician-scientists in psychiatry hold both degrees.

Formal Application in PGY1

A formal application is typically made in the first year of residency training. However, residents may apply at any point during their training. The application must include:

  1. Curriculum vitae
  2. Statement of interest
  3. Letter of support from the resident’s mentor
  4. An outline of the research project

Applications will be reviewed by the executive committee, who will give recommendations for acceptance to the research track training director. Selection of candidates is based on the candidate’s good standing in the general residency program, their research potential, their research mentor, and the quality of the research statement.

Applicants who are not accepted to the STEPP program will be given the opportunity to meet with a member of the executive committee to discuss how the application can be improved and to be encouraged to resubmit their application throughout the year. Appointments of residents to the research track typically begin on June 24 in the PGY2 year, to coincide with the start of the academic year.
