Ana Xavier, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, has been selected as the vice chair for the Pediatric Aggressive Mature B-Cell Lymphomas Panel for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines.

Michael Stalvey, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes, has been selected to serve on the Executive Committee to plan ResearchCon 2022.

The Health Equity Scholars and program directors Last week, the UAB Pediatrics Health Equity Scholars spent three days participating in an immersive experience to explore the historical context of health disparities and inequities within Alabama. The group traveled throughout the Black Belt of Alabama, visiting places pivotal to the Civil Rights Movement and areas battling current health disparities and inequities.

Chibuzo Ilonze, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, won the 2021 Alabama State Chess Championship in the Premier Section.

The AAP/VON Scholar Awards are awarded every year to five fellows and early career neonatologists by the Vermont Oxford Network (VON) the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Neonatal Perinatal Medicine (SoNPM). 

Michele Kong, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, has been named one of the Birmingham Business Journal (BBJ) Women to Watch 2021. 

Randy Cron, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology, received the 2021 James T. Cassidy Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Rheumatology. 

Vivek Shukla, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Neonatology, received the Mead Johnson Nutrition Early Career Speaker Award at the Perinatal Research Society Annual Meeting. Dr. Shukla was honored for his presentation titled, “Advanced Machine Learning Based Prediction of Perinatal Outcomes.”

David Kimberlin, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, was awarded the 2021 Wallace Alexander Clyde Distinguished Service Award from the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. 

Michelle Veters, M.D., fellow in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, won the poster session award for the Research and Scholarship Category at the Educational Research and Innovations in Clinical and Health Sciences (ENRICH) Week.

Two department faculty were honored with Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics Awards at the annual Awards Dinner on Sept. 25.

Tamera Coyne-Beasley, M.D., MPH, professor in the Division of Adolescent Medicine, has been appointed to the Committee on Progress toward Human Health and Community Resilience in the Gulf of Mexico Region of the National Academy of Sciences.

Tamera Coyne-Beasley, M.D., MPH, professor in the Division of Adolescent Medicine, has been selected for the Leadership Birmingham Class of 2021-2022. Dr. Coyne-Beasley joins a class of 50 leaders from a diversity of backgrounds in the Birmingham community.
