Allergy 2017 webThe UAB Allergy & Immunology Fellowship Training Program is an accredited joint adult and pediatric fellowship program accepting one candidate each year with board eligibility or certification in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics or Med-Peds.

The UAB Allergy & Immunology Fellowship Program, like most allergy & immunology fellowship programs nationwide, participates in the AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

Allergy/immunology fellows receive intensive clinical training in allergic and immunologic diseases in children with the faculty of the Division of Pediatric Allergy & Immunology at the Children's of Alabama Park Place clinics. Fellows see adult patients with known or suspected primary or secondary immune deficiencies at the UAB Kirklin Clinic and adults with a variety of allergic and immunologic diseases at the Birmingham VA Medical Center and the UAB Gardendale Allergy and Asthma Clinic.

Fellows attend one half-day clinic per week on a rotating basis in the private office of volunteer faculty members who practice in the local community. Fellows participate in inpatient consults at UAB University Hospital, Children's of Alabama and the Birmingham VA Medical Center. During their two years of training, fellows are also encouraged to pursue electives of their choosing in adult or pediatric ENT, dermatology, GI and pulmonary specialties with considerable overlap in our field. Fellows gain experience with food and drug challenges, oral immunotherapy (OIT), drug desensitizations, allergen immunotherapy and immunoglobulin replacement management.

Fellows and faculty meet twice weekly for didactic conferences in basic and clinical science and for a monthly journal club/case presentation session with community allergist/immunologists. As per ACGME guidelines, all fellows are required to pursue a research project and a quality improvement project under a mentor either among the Fellowship Faculty or other faculty members at UAB and to present their work at a national meeting and in scholarly journals.

The UAB Allergy & Immunology Program boasts a 100% board pass rate and strives to educate physicians in a supportive, clinically diverse environment that is centered around patient safety and quality improvement. The program prepares trainees for either academic or clinical practice.
