Mahmud Mossa-Basha MDAfter a national search, Mahmud Mossa-Basha, M.D., has been named chair of the UAB Department of Radiology, effective November 1, 2025. Mossa-Basha is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in neuroradiology whose career reflects a deep commitment to academic excellence, innovative research, and clinical transformation.

Mossa-Basha currently serves as professor of Radiology, Neurology, and Neuroscience, and Ellsworth C. and Nancy D. Alvord Endowed Chair in Neuro-oncology at University of Washington (UW) Medicine. He also serves as vice chair of Clinical Research and of Clinical Transformation. His prior leadership roles at UW Medicine include vice chair of Clinical Operations and of Quality and Safety, director of MRI, and chief of Radiology. In these capacities, he spearheaded pivotal efforts in artificial intelligence implementation, validation, and development; significantly improved imaging throughput and operational efficiency; strengthened research infrastructure; and enhanced extramural funding through federal and industry streams, reaching top 13 status in NIH funding among academic radiology departments.

As co-director of the Vascular Imaging Lab, Mossa-Basha has helped drive progress in advanced imaging of atherosclerotic disease and vasculopathies, with notable contributions in vessel wall imaging, stroke diagnostics, and vasculopathy imaging. He has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications and served as principal investigator on numerous NIH, foundation, and industry funded research projects.

Mossa-Basha has supported the growth and success of dozens of trainees and junior faculty, fostering successful faculty academic careers and future academic leaders across disciplines. Clinically, he is widely respected for his expertise in neuroimaging, with specific focus in cross-sectional vascular imaging, cerebrovascular disease, stroke, image processing, and contrast media.

Mossa-Basha has been recognized with numerous awards including the Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research and Honored Educator Awards from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). He currently serves as senior editor of the American Journal of Neuroradiology, on the RSNA Board of Trustees, the American College of Radiology Neuroradiology Commission, and the board of the Society of Magnetic Resonance Angiography.

Mossa-Basha earned his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine. He completed residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, and a two-year Diagnostic Neuroradiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.
