Badari Birur, M.D., professor in the UAB Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology, has assumed the role of Medical Director of the UAB Center for Psychiatric Medicine (CPM). Birur succeeds Charles Davis, III, M.D., who had served as Associate Medical Director since January 2026.

"Dr. Birur has demonstrated exceptional dedication to our patients, trainees, and department throughout his career at UAB,” said Adrienne Lahti, M.D., chair of the UAB Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology. “His clinical expertise, collaborative leadership style, and commitment to advancing psychiatric care make him uniquely qualified to lead the Center for Psychiatric Medicine into its next chapter."
Birur joined UAB as an assistant professor of Psychiatry in 2014 and was promoted to professor in 2024. He has served as the Psychiatry Clerkship Director since August 2025 and currently provides clinical care while teaching and mentoring residents and medical students. Birur is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
In his new role, Birur will focus on enhancing the quality, safety, and experience of patient care and position the CPM as a national leader of psychiatric care.

The CPM is committed to providing the highest-quality services and treatments for adolescents, adults, geriatric patients, and families. The center offers services in the areas of neuropsychiatry, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and addiction recovery, as well as in-depth evaluation and treatment for a broad range of psychiatric disorders.
