Dr. Danielle Powell University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs Danielle Powell, M.D. was selected to receive the 2025 Distinguished Public Service, Health Equity, and Advocacy Award by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R).

The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation established the Distinguished Public Service Award to honor individuals who made significant contributions to the enhance the quality-of-life for individuals with disabilities, or for individuals in vulnerable and/or underrepresented populations. The Academy recently adjusted the name of the award to specifically include the amazing work being done by in the areas of health equity and advocacy.

Dr. Powell’s career exemplifies all the qualities of this award.

“My goal has always been to provide holistic, compassionate care to my patients, yet I have witnessed firsthand the disparities that persist among vulnerable populations, especially individuals with disabilities,” says Dr. Powell. “This recognition strengthens my commitment to advancing equity in medicine, and I hope that the work I do will continue to make a difference not only for the patients I serve, but also for individuals with disabilities across the country.”

AAPM&R is the national medical specialty organization representing more than 10,000 physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Powell has long been active in AAPM&R serving as a member of the Access, Impact, and Opportunity Committee as well as the Chair of the Spina Bifida Member Community.

“I am so very proud of Dr. Powell. This award is a great recognition of how she tirelessly champions for our patients regardless of faith, color, or ability. It is through her direct effort that our patients have increased access and engagement, which substantially improves the quality of care that we are able to provide,” says Vu Nguyen, M.D., Department of PM&R Chairman.
