Goo Lee, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor in the Division of Anatomic Pathology, will serve in the roles of interim section head of gastrointestinal (GI) pathology and GI fellowship director, effective Monday, April 14. Lee assumes the role from his predecessor, Sameer Al Diffalha, M.D., Vice Chair for Outreach and associate professor in the Division of Anatomic Pathology, who has served in these capacities since 2017.
Lee joined the department in 2018 and has served in surgical and GI pathology throughout the duration of his career. In 2022, he was promoted to associate professor, and in 2023, he was named to the CAP House of Delegates. A rare GI case submitted by Lee was featured in the journal Gastro Hep Advances in 2024.
GI pathology provides comprehensive GI, pancreatic and hepatobiliary diagnostic pathologic services. It renders consultations on challenging cases to UAB Pathology outreach services (CPPP), Children's of Alabama, Birmingham VA Medical Center and other local and regional institutions.
