The Department of Pathology is thrilled to announce a new faculty member joining our team July 1.

Sarah Anderson, D.O., a recent forensic pathology fellow in the UAB Department of Pathology, is joining the Division of Forensic Pathology as an assistant professor.

Anderson earned her medical degree from Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2019 before completing two years of residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of South Alabama in 2021. She transferred to UAB to complete her AP/CP residency in 2023, serving as chief resident for anatomic pathology in her final year. Upon completion of residency, Anderson stayed at UAB to complete a surgical pathology instructor/fellowship in 2024 before pursuing a fellowship in forensics.

As a trainee, Anderson was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, received the 2022 PEARL Award, which recognizes a UAB Pathology resident who demonstrates excellence in patient care, education and research in laboratory medicine and received the 2023 Outstanding Trainee Teaching Award for Multidisciplinary and Medical Student Education. A frequent attendee of the annual Tri-State Pathology conference, Anderson won Best Poster Award in 2023 and Committee Choice Award in 2024.

Since 2021, Anderson has taught tissue histology, cardiovascular, pulmonary, breast, bone and soft tissue and gastrointestinal pathology to undergraduate students, medical students and residents. She has authored 10 publications, given more than 20 oral and poster presentations at national and international meetings and has given 32 presentations at conferences. Anderson is affiliated with several professional societies, including the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, National Association of Medical Examiners, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, American Society for Clinical Pathology and the Society for Cardiovascular Pathology.
