The UAB Department of Otolaryngology welcomed Anne Kane, M.D., in August 2025 as an associate professor and surgeon-scientist in the Division of Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery.
Kane earned her bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Tulane University in 2009 and completed her medical degree at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She then completed her Otolaryngology residency at LSU, followed by a fellowship in advanced head and neck surgery and microvascular reconstruction at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
In 2020, Kane began her academic career as an assistant professor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. An active member of the American Head and Neck Society and the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Kane is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
She has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters on head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction. She is a recipient of the Triological Society Career Development Award as well as additional institutional level grant funding.
Kane shares her excitement for her new position and commitment to advancing care for head and neck cancer patients.
What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
Kane: I am a head and neck surgical oncologist and reconstructive surgeon with a passion for head and neck anatomy and caring for patients with cancer. Head and neck cancers can profoundly impact a person’s ability to speak, swallow, and even their appearance. It is a privilege to treat these cancers and help restore my patients’ quality of life.
What aspects of your new role here are you most excited about?
Kane: I am excited to join a thriving department that provides cutting-edge treatments for head and neck cancer patients. As a surgeon-scientist in the department, my research focuses on the impact of health disparities and social determinants of health in head and neck cancer. I aim to contribute to meaningful interventions that address these disparities and improve outcomes for affected patients.
What are your goals for making an impact through patient care in this role?
Kane: My goal is to deliver exceptional clinical care and outcomes for head and neck cancer patients through advanced surgical techniques, innovative clinical trials, and comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment approaches. I am deeply committed to improving patient care and outcomes by staying at the forefront of medical advancements. Additionally, I am passionate about mentoring and teaching the next generation of physicians and surgeons, instilling in them the technical skills and compassionate approach needed to provide the highest level of care.
