Stephanie Spain, CRNP, advanced practice provider (APP) in the UAB Department of Neurology, recently received the 2025 APP Champion Award in recognition of exceptional APPs. The award, created by the Advanced Practice Provider Executive Council (APPEC) in collaboration with the Office of Advanced Practice Providers, signifies Spain's embodiment of UAB Core Values and the lasting impact she has made and continues to make on patient care and the health system.
Spain earned her BSN from UAB in 1995 and then worked in the neuro intensive care unit from 1996 to 2003. During that time, she earned her MSN - CRNP from UAB in 2000. In 2003, she started working for the Department of Neurology under Ray Watts, M.D., who served as the department chair at that time, and she has been with the department ever since.
"My favorite thing about my work is getting to know the patients and families as we see them over the course of several years and them getting to know me," Spain said. "It's the personal relationship you develop with them and the fact that you are invested in them."
Spain was surprised in clinic with the award last month, with several colleagues and representatives from the APPEC and Office of Advanced Practice Providers in attendance.
"I would like to thank those that supported it as it helps me feel appreciated for the time and effort I put into the job," Spain said. "Thank you to everyone that has helped and taught me through 20-plus years in the department."
