Amy Warriner, M.D., professor in the Department of Medicine, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Brewer-Heslin Award for Professionalism in Medicine. Established by the late Gov. Albert Brewer, the annual award recognizes members of the Heersink School of Medicine faculty who exercise the highest commitment to providing excellent and compassionate medical care to their patients, maintaining professional and ethical standards, and leading the next generation of physicians.
Warriner, an accomplished endocrinologist, serves as director of the UAB Weight Loss Medicine clinic and medical director of both the UAB Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Clinic and UAB Gender Health Clinic. She also acts as the fellowship program director for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism and the associate program director for the Obesity Medicine Fellowship. She has received several honors, including multiple UAB Patient Experience Excellence Awards, the Marsha P. Johnson Hope for Tomorrow Award, the Cobbs/Rutsky Award for Clinical Excellence, and the Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of Medicine.
Since arriving at UAB in 2007, Warriner’s work has consisted of helping patients manage their health and weight. She’s earned a reputation among her patients for being compassionate and non-judgmental in her care of these sensitive conditions. This attitude of kindness and understanding permeates throughout all her work at UAB.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” said Warriner. “It is a reflection of what I enjoy most about being a physician at UAB: finding opportunities, and having the support, to lead with compassion and integrity. I am thankful to my division and department for the nomination and to the Heersink School of Medicine for the recognition.”
Warriner’s work not only benefits individual patients, but also the broader community. She holds a leadership role in the Southern Society of Endocrinologists, which strives to provide patients with highest possible level of medical care. Warriner also has a multidisciplinary Weight Loss Medicine program and works with the UAB Population Health Diabetes Prevention Program and Student Health Services.
“Dr. Warriner's remarkable career reflects a physician who truly embodies the spirit of the Brewer-Heslin Award,” said Mark Dransfield, M.D., chair of the Department of Medicine. “Her patients experience not just expert medical care, but genuine compassion and respect. Her colleagues benefit from her collaborative leadership and commitment to excellence. Her trainees receive mentorship that prepares them to provide ethical, compassionate care. The medical community gains from her contributions to professional organizations and clinical program development.”
