Founded in 2011, the Neurosurgery Leadership Council (NLC) is a volunteer leadership group dedicated to advancing clinical care, research and education in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery.

For more than a decade, the NLC has worked closely with the department chair, faculty and UAB Development to strengthen the department’s mission and secure philanthropic support. Members help guide strategic initiatives, expand fundraising efforts, and promote the work of UAB neurosurgeons and neuroscientists.

Council Mission

Members of the NLC bring a passion for advancing neurologic research while fostering interest in the community and advocating for the need for financial support for the department.

Over the last 14 years, the NLC has grown into a dynamic group of more than 30 dedicated philanthropists, supporting the department’s mission of providing quality clinical care to patients, advancing research and training the next generation of neurosurgical leaders.

Council Objectives

Members of the NLC work collaboratively to:

  • Identify innovative ways to support the continued growth of the department and its residency program.
  • Foster relationships with community partners to fund key departmental priorities.
  • Provide mentorship and personal support to neurosurgery residents.
  • Contribute to faculty recruitment.

Council Initiatives

  • Adopt-A-Resident

Residency in neurosurgery is one of the most challenging journeys in medicine. Through the Adopt-A-Resident program, members of the NLC are paired with UAB neurosurgery residents. Members provide support and encouragement to residents and help them navigate life both inside and outside the hospital. This mentorship-based initiative enhances resident wellness, builds meaningful, lasting connections and creates a support network that strengthens the residency experience.

    What Does It Involve?

As an Adopt-A-Resident participant, your role may include:

    • Checking in by phone, email or over coffee
    • Sending encouragement during high-stress rotations
    • Attending NLC events where residents are recognized
    • Sharing advice or insights when requested
    • Being a steady presence throughout residency

There are no required time commitments—just a willingness to offer support and build connection.

Upcoming Events

NLC events offer members the chance to engage directly with residents, faculty, and one another while staying informed on the latest departmental advancements.

Council meetings are typically held on the UAB medical campus and include a presentation from a faculty member or resident(s) on a neurosurgical topic and are followed by NLC leadership updates, lunch and discussion.

The NLC also hosts and/or gathers for receptions and other social events in support of the Department of Neurosurgery:
