A female doctor bend's down to eye level as she talks with a cancer patient who is receiving her treatment intravenously. She is wearing a white lab coat and has a clipboard in hand as she takes notes. The patient is dressed casually and she sits back in the chair waiting for her treatment to finish, and both are wearing medical masks to protect them from COVID.

The generation of new knowledge through research is a key goal of the Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health.

The institute collaborates with partners to generate solutions to complex health problems and assess their efficacy through high-quality clinical trials, implementation science, and outcomes research. UAB researchers and global partners are making a lasting impact on many global health problems.

The institute focuses on developing innovative tools and strategies for priority global health problems, including maternal and child health, trauma and injury, communicable diseases, and non-communicable diseases like cancer. It supports research on technologies to improve health and health care access through large-scale, multicenter, multinational trials, and implementation studies to identify the best global health solutions.
