Student-led organizations across the Heersink UAB School of Medicine empower medical students to learn more about the breadth of opportunities in Family Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine.
Family Medicine Interest Group
While the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) has long worked to support medical students interested in Family Medicine by offering mentorship, networking, and leadership development opportunities and emphasizing community service, under new faculty leadership, the organization hopes to expand students’ exposure to the field of Family Medicine. The group hopes to infuse more shadowing opportunities, research, and service learning into the monthly programming.
Sports Medicine Interest Group
Medical students participating in Sports Medicine Interest Group (SMIG) sessions are introduced to primary care sports medicine as well as exploring the role of a team physician. SMIG offers a pathway to shadow and assist in sideline coverage, build relationships with UAB’s multidisciplinary Sports & Exercise Medicine team, learn more about treatment plans and the MSK/orthopedic curriculum, and even work on their ultrasound skills. This new program was greeted enthusiastically, with more than 28% of Heersink’s latest class of MS1s requesting more information on the workshops and meetings.
