Shane C. Wiley, MBA, is a seasoned executive leader with a distinguished career in academic medicine administration.
Since 2018, Wiley has been Executive Administrator (EA) for the UAB Department of Medicine (DOM), the largest department in the Heersink School of Medicine with approximately 550 faculty, 250 clinical trainees, 150
advanced providers, and 1,200 staff.
As EA, Wiley leads the administrative functions for the DOM, acting as a key advisor and strategic partner to the Chair of Medicine. He is responsible for aligning departmental resources with institutional priorities, overseeing financial stewardship, and fostering a culture of leadership and continuous improvement. In the past 8 years, Wiley has been an integral part of improving the daily operations of the DOM.

Led the design and implementation of transparent, equitable faculty compensation plans for each subspeciality division in the DOM, incorporating changes of Funds Flow 2.0 and ensuring faculty input for what is most important to them.

Developed “Move Forward,” a standardized process for DOM faculty recruitment where he and senior DOM leaders review the proformas and LOIs of approximately 70 prospective faculty per year. This process has increased accuracy and transparency, decreased bias and errors, and supported roughly 10% annual growth of the DOM for the past 5 years.

Co-created the Developing Emerging Administrative Leaders (DEAL) Program for promising UAB staff members to learn the essential components of administrative and management positions across UAB including human resources, finance, research, education, and clinical operations. .
Additionally, Wiley is actively engaged in institutional governance and professional development, serving on multiple committees and task forces, including the UAB Health Services Foundation Stewardship Committee and the AAMC Group on Business Affairs. He is also a frequent speaker at national and institutional events on topics such as compensation benchmarking, shared services, and leadership development. In recognition of his exemplary contributions to the academic mission of UAB Medicine and his inspirational commitment to serve others, Wiley received the Will Ferniany Academic Medicine Leadership Award in May 2025.
Wiley began his career at UAB in 2006, working in finance-related roles in the Department of Pathology for 5 years, then serving 8 years in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease (5 as Div. Admin., 3 as Business Officer.) Wiley holds a Master of Business Administration from UAB and a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Jacksonville State University.
