Most noted for his work in nutrition, Dr. James Sommerville McLester was appointed the first Professor of Medicine and first Chair of the Department of Medicine of the Medical College of Alabama in 1945, when the medical college relocated from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa campus and established as a four-year medical school in Birmingham, Alabama.
