Teaching with Technology Series

Educational technology provides a powerful means to better engage students and teach more effectively. Through its Teaching with Technology Series, UAB instructional designers from the Office of Learning Technologies guide UAB instructors in exploring Canvas features such as gradebook, feedback tools, rubrics, and group tools, as well as other learning technologies available at UAB including Harmonize. Even if you have been teaching with technology for some time, come learn some new tips and tricks!

Workshop Descriptions

  • Canvas Gradebook Part 1

    Take the guesswork out of grading in Canvas! In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to set up your Gradebook for accuracy and efficiency. We'll cover how to apply grading schemes, control grade visibility with the hide/post feature, and ensure your grade calculations are working as expected—all to help you save time and reduce student confusion.

  • Canvas Gradebook Part 2

    In this workshop, attendees will learn how to review gradebook calculations at the end of the semester, check the grade scheme, and publish grades to Banner.

  • Providing Effective Feedback to Your Online Students

    Student engagement is key for the success of online students! Come learn practical strategies and tools for delivering clear, timely, and impactful feedback in online courses that will engage your students and enhance their learning.

  • Active Learning Strategies in your Online Courses

    Want to boost student engagement in your online courses? This workshop introduces practical active learning strategies that encourage participation, critical thinking, and skill development. You'll explore a variety of digital tools and activity ideas designed to make your virtual classroom more interactive and student-centered.

  • Teaching with Rubrics Checklists in your Online Courses

    Students thrive when they understand course expectations. Learn how to use rubrics and checklists to clearly communicate the expectations for activities or assessments – a win for student success. This session will explore different types and formats, offering practical tips that will streamline grading and increase consistency in grading – a win for faculty and instructors. A win for all!

  • Facilitating Group Activities Online

    Want to make group work more effective in your online courses? This workshop explores a variety of group activity types and offers practical strategies for planning, organizing, and facilitating collaboration in virtual environments. Learn best practices, discover useful tools, and walk away with tips to boost student engagement and teamwork online.

  • Designing and Delivering for Large Classes

    Teaching a large online class can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. This workshop will equip you with practical strategies for designing and delivering engaging, manageable, and inclusive learning experiences at scale. Learn how to streamline communication, foster student interaction, and use technology to stay organized and connected—no matter how big your class gets.

  • Upgrade the Discussion Tool in Your Course with Harmonize

    In this session, you’ll learn how to take full advantage of the key Harmonize features that drive increased student engagement, promote inclusive learning, and save instructors’ time. You’ll learn how you build your first Harmonize discussion and how you can use powerful features like multi-media, milestones, and auto-grading to take your course discussion to the next level. By the end of the session, you’ll know how to set up, moderate, evaluate, and encourage student participation in your online course discussions. We’ll cover how you can:

    • Author rich content
    • Configure milestones (Ex. Multiple due dates)
    • Auto grade student participation
    • Easily evaluate student performance and provide substantive feedback
    • Monitor for students who may need help
  • Becoming a Canvas Super-User, New Quizzes

    Join us for an interactive workshop exploring Canvas New Quizzes. Whether you're new to New Quizzes or looking to deepen your understanding, this session will guide you through its most impactful features. We will discuss how to easily migrate your Classic Quiz to New Quizzes, a time-saving way to moderate quizzes, additional quiz settings, and how to view analytics to track student performance. Feel free to bring a few quiz questions to start working on your own quiz during the session.

  • Introduction to PlayPosit

    Curious about using interactive video to enhance your teaching? This beginner-friendly workshop introduces PlayPost, a powerful tool for adding questions, polls, and discussions directly into video content. Explore key features and discover how PlayPosit can boost student engagement in both online and hybrid courses. No prior experience required - just bring your curiosity!

  • Increasing Learner Engagement with Branched Learning in PlayPosit

    Ready to make your PlayPosit lessons more interactive and personalized? This workshop will show you how to use features like jumping assessment questions, hotspots, and branching pathways to let students guide their own learning journey. Learn how to create dynamic, self-directed experiences that boost engagement and content mastery.

  • PlayPosit Learner Made Bulbs

    Supercharge learner content creation with interactive videos! Did you know your learners can also create bulbs using the Learner Made Bulb application? All license types include PlayPosit's learner-made bulbs to promote student leadership, agency, and content expertise. Watch content retention soar!

  • Simple Syllabus for Your Spring Courses

    Ready to create your Simple Syllabus for your Spring 2026 courses? Join us for this interactive workshop. The presenters will guide you in how to access and edit your syllabus in the Simple Syllabus tool. You will also learn how to import a syllabus from a previous term and how to see which students have viewed your syllabus!
