UAB’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) has designed a workshop for Laboratory Managers, Supervisors and Science Educators that will offer an in-depth review of:

  • laboratory safety practices
  • UAB Policies and Procedures
  • regulatory compliance
  • incident response

After this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Conduct risk assessments to identify appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), laboratory equipment, and emergency response measures for working with biological materials and hazardous chemicals.
  2. Properly handle, package, and dispose of biological waste.
  3. Use the Environmental Health and Safety Assistant (EHSA) to manifest hazardous waste.
  4. Use EHSA to accurately maintain and update the laboratory’s chemical inventory.
  5. Establish and maintain a compliant Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA).
  6. Develop essential safety documentation—including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), a Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), and a Lab Safety Plan—to ensure readiness for safety inspections and reviews.
