UAB to Launch Alabama’s First Bachelor’s Degree in eSports Performance Management and Coaching

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is set to launch a new Bachelor of Science degree in eSports Performance Management and Coaching in Fall 2025, the first degree of its kind in Alabama and among a select group nationwide. This innovative program reflects UAB’s forward-looking approach to preparing students for careers in the dynamic and fast-evolving esports industry.

Housed within the School of Education and Human Sciences, the undergraduate program emphasizes coaching, wellness, and performance strategies tailored specifically to esports. It draws upon UAB’s established expertise in kinesiology and exercise science to equip future professionals with the tools to support the physical and mental performance of esports athletes.

In addition to the bachelor's degree, UAB will offer both undergraduate and graduate certificates in eSports Performance Management and Coaching. These shorter programs are designed for students and professionals who want to develop targeted skills in the field without pursuing a full degree.

“eSports continues to grow at an impressive pace, and these programs are designed to meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals,” said Teresa Taber Doughty, Dean of the School of Education and Human Sciences. “We are proud to offer a curriculum that merges health, coaching, and innovation to prepare students for this exciting industry.”

Students will take courses covering the history and theory of gaming, performance psychology, esports communications, and the health and ergonomic needs of players. Coursework will also explore the business and management side of competitive gaming, offering a comprehensive understanding of the industry.
