Dr. Snyder with Faculty and Staff at May 9th School of Education and Sciences Meeting

As the final chapter closes on an extraordinary 37-year career, the legacy of Scott W. Snyder, Ph.D., will be resonate for generations to come. Since joining the University of Alabama in 1988 as an Assistant Professor,  he has been a cornerstone of the School of Education and Human Sciences, particularly in the fields of statistics, educational measurement, and evaluation – subjects he has masterfully taught since 1994. Throughout his tenure, he has brought unparalleled depth and breadth to the classroom, teaching more than 20 different undergraduate and graduate courses. His scholarly impact is equally remarkable, having authored or co-authored over 60 professional publications.

His career has been marked by a deep commitment to academic rigor, student success, and faculty development. In addition to his teaching and research, he has worn many hats at UAB. He served as Associate Dean, Interim Dean, Director, and held numerous other leadership positions within the School. Beyond the School, he contributed significantly as a Senior and Associate Scientist across several UAB research centers. If a role needed vision and guidance, he  likely filled it- and elevated it.

His academic journey began with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and teacher certification from the State University of New York College at Potsdam in 1979. He earned both his master’s and doctoral degrees in child development from Purdue University in 1983 and 1985, respectively. Before coming to UAB, he served in various roles at Appalachian State University and the Western Carolina Center, where he was known for his expertise in research, evaluation, and program coordination.

On May 9, during the final faculty meeting of the academic year, colleagues celebrated his retirement with warmth and laughter. Sandra Sims, Ph.D., described him as “an anchor” for the school – a steady source of wisdom,  resilience and positivity for faculty, staff, students and the broader university community. While he may be stepping away from his formal roles, his impact will endure. His optimism, leadership and scholarly contributions have laid a strong foundation for the UAB School of Education and Human Sciences, one that will continue to inspire and shape its future for years to come.
