Marie Dufay-Verbie comes from Paris, France. She earned her PhD at the University at Buffalo and has taught French language, literature and culture at Allegheny College before coming to Birmingham, Alabama. Her research explores humor and social dynamics in 19th- and 20th-century French literature, with a particular focus on the political and cultural functions of laughter as a form of resistance, social critique, and cultural reflection. She is also engaged in Translation Studies and Second Language Acquisition, especially as they relate to questions of identity and intercultural communication.
