Beginning June 1, Blazer Express will be increasing passenger limits up to seated capacity. The shift comes as the university continues its transition of employees back to campus.

“Our new seating limits allow for more efficient service for our passengers,” said André Davis, director of UAB Transportation. “We want our riders to be safe, so we have maintained increased measures related to masks and cleaning protocols.”

As the university brings more employees and students back on campus, UAB Transportation is reassessing our temporary parking solutions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Effective Monday, May 10, Express Lot 4 permit holders that have been parking in the 19thStreet Parking Deck and the University Boulevard Parking Deck will see changes. Entry access will now ONLY be allowed weekdays from 4-8 a.m. There will still be 24-hour access on weekends. Employees arriving outside of these hours should return to parking in your assigned Express lot.

If you do not have a current valid parking permit, please visit the UAB Transportation office for assistance.

In observance of Memorial Day, there will be no Blazer Express bus, Highlands Shuttle, or Motorist Assistance Roadside Service (MARS) on Monday, May 31. The nighttime Safety Escort van service will operate as normal on both Sunday, May 30 and Monday, May 31. Medical center employees with permits in the Express parking lots should follow the normal holiday parking plan and use the 6th Avenue Parking Deck.

Due to road construction along 6th Avenue South, the Blazer Express Silver route will be temporarily modified effective Monday April 26. Thru traffic will be suspended on 6th Avenue between 16th Street and 18th Street. Thus, the Blazer Express Silver route will be a new point-to-point route between Express Lot 4 and North Pavilion Main Entrance using 5th Avenue South as our main corridor. The new line will be designated the North Pavilion Route.

Don’t let old information lead to getting a ticket on UAB’s campus. UAB Transportation is encouraging all permit-holders to ensure they are in compliance with parking policy by updating their registration information today.

Summer parking permit sales start at 8 a.m. on April 1, while Fall permit sales are scheduled to begin July 1. Students may purchase a permit online.  UAB Transportation will offer options among seven zones this Summer, with Zones A through G available to all students and Zones A & 7 offered for housing students. Please note, Zone C permits will not be available for purchase during the Summer. 

Due to inclement winter weather, UAB Transportation will be making adjustments to parking and other services.

Because of reduced capacity and enhanced COVID-19 safety protocols, several UAB Transportation services will remain offline during the spring semester. These services will be re-evaluated again for the summer and fall semesters.

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, UAB Transportation will suspend some services Monday, Jan. 18.

The following services will not be available:

• Blazer Express
• Medicine Deck Shuttle
• Highlands Shuttle
• Motorist Assistance Roadside Service (MARS)

Employee express lot permit holders should use the 6^th Avenue Parking Deck as an alternative parking location. Safety Escort will be available; use the TapRide app to request a ride.

With the upcoming demolition of the Education Building, Lot 16A will be permanently closed in order to construct the new UAB Science and Engineering Complex. This closure is effective Jan. 1, 2021.

If you’re going to be on campus on Nov. 26 and 27, you should be aware of the changes to several of UAB Transportation’s services.

If students do not have a permit for the spring semester, they may purchase a hangtag online beginning at 8 a.m. Dec. 1

A limited number of Zone A, B, and 7 permits will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis. Zone C permits will not be available for the spring semester. Please review rates and zone options before purchasing a permit.

UAB Transportation is offering temporary parking options to employees and students in select locations across campus. We are able to offer this option after our team monitored the impact of phased re-entry and hybrid learning plans on parking demand. Details regarding the opportunities are below. 

In response to vastly reduced passenger demand, UAB Transportation is suspending the Blazer Express South Green route and Blaze Ride paratransit service effective October 1. All remaining Blazer Express routes will continue on their normal schedule.

After reviewing the impact of reduced bus capacities on all Blazer Express bus routes, UAB Transportation is suspending the Purple, Gold, and North Green routes for the upcoming fall semester. The buses will be reassigned to more heavily used routes ensure adequate social distancing and timely service.

After reducing services beginning in April, UAB Transportation is preparing for a successful fall by announcing a return of some of those services.

In order to support critical COVID-19 testing efforts, UAB Transportation must temporarily close Zone F-3 to commuter students. We understand that this may be an inconvenience to students, but the University of Alabama at Birmingham must alter protocol across campus to provide aid and support in the current State of Emergency faced by Alabama, and the country as a whole.

ATTENTION: All Express Lot 4 permit holders:

In order to accommodate increased patient loads and returning UAB Medicine staff, Express Lot 4 permit holders working in the Kirklin Clinic and Whitaker Building should resume regular parking arrangements. This change went into effect Monday, July 6.
