Student Experience

Green Zone Training 2026 The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Veterans Services office hosted its Green Zone Training on April 14, providing faculty and staff with resources and strategies to better support military-connected students transitioning to university life.

Held in the Hill Student Center Ballrooms, the two-hour training focused on increasing awareness of military culture and the unique experiences veterans often face when entering higher education. Participants learned about challenges military-connected students may encounter in academic and campus settings, as well as resources available through UAB to help foster student success.

The training was designed to help faculty and staff become more informed allies for military-connected students by encouraging understanding, communication and support across campus. Upon completion, all 59 participants were certified as UAB Green Zone Ambassadors; joining a growing network of faculty and staff committed to creating a more informed and supportive campus for those who have served and their families.

“Our goal is to help build a campus culture where military-connected students know they have resources on campus and people who understand and support them,” said Demetrius Pearson, UAB Veterans Services director.

The session also highlighted UAB’s ongoing commitment to creating a veteran-friendly campus environment and ensuring military-connected students have access to the support systems needed to thrive academically and personally.

Through initiatives such as Green Zone Training, UAB Veterans Services continues to strengthen campus awareness and promote a culture of inclusion for those who have served in the military and their families.
