Blazer families, including more than 2,000 attendees from near and far, came together October 3–5 for the ninth annual Fall Family Weekend, a UAB tradition that celebrates community, connection, and Blazer spirit. Hosted by the Office of Off-Campus Student and Family Engagement, the weekend featured a variety of events designed to strengthen family ties to UAB and the Birmingham community.
One of the weekend’s highlights was the Family Weekend Tailgate, held in Blazer Village near Protective Stadium ahead of the UAB vs. Army football game. Families enjoyed food, fellowship, and fun while showing their Blazer pride.
UAB President Ray Watts helped announce the winners of the 2025 UAB Family of the Year Award. This year’s recipients, Keisha and Robert Nelson, were recognized for their involvement and commitment to the UAB community. The Nelsons joined the Family Resource Council in the fall of 2024, when their daughter, Alex, began pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree at UAB. Each year, the Division of Student Affairs and the Off-Campus Student and Family Engagement office honor a family that embodies the Blazer Way, demonstrating school spirit, dedication, and support for fellow Blazer families.
“The Nelsons’ dedication to engaging current and incoming families and to supporting social media and communication initiatives has significantly enhanced the involvement of UAB families and friends,” said Meredith Kahl, director of Off-Campus Student and Family Engagement.
The award celebrates those who go above and beyond to foster connection, pride, and belonging within the UAB family.
