The UAB Division of Student Affairs has many exceptional staff members who serve our students with professionalism, kindness and integrity. Each month, based on a pool of nominations, the Professional Development Committee announces two employees, one from the professional staff and the other from the administrative staff.

Student Affairs ended a successful year with a bash
The Student Affairs Professional Development Committee hosted its annual holiday social to thank Division staff for a year of hard work serving our students. Staff enjoyed a full culinary spread from Campus Dining, complete with holiday-themed sweet treats.

Blazer Welcome makes a comeback: Submit your event!
Students can look forward to a month of free activities and events when they return from the holiday break in January. Blazer Welcome events will kick off Monday, Jan. 9 and go through Saturday, Feb. 4.

'Tis the season to support the less fortunate
Veterans Services is providing the UAB community with an opportunity to give to a needy family this holiday by hosting a toy drive benefitting military veterans and their dependents.

New Employee Spotlight: Rodney "Rock George
Student Affairs recently welcomed one of its newest staff members: Rodney "Rock" George. Rock serves as the Campus Dining Services Coordinator in the Department of Housing and Residence Life. In his role, he will facilitate the Blazer Bucks Program and Meal Plan Assessment as well as other duties as assigned.

November Employees of the Month: David Dada and April Coleman
The November Employees of the Month are David Dada, Coordinator of Leadership and Service for UAB Student Involvement and Leadership, and April Coleman, Counseling Intake and Referral Coordinator for Student Counseling Services. Their exemplary work ethic and commitment to the mission of the Division of Student Affairs makes them staffers to be revered.

Career and Professional Development Column: Consider partnering with CPD to host a Nonprofit Industry Panel
Nonprofit industry speaker panels introduce students to career options of which they may not be familiar, and they can also be used as a program recruitment tool. This semester, UAB Career and Professional Development hosted a Nonprofit Industry Panel. Students were able to learn about workplace culture, the rewards and challenges of non-profit work, and how to be a competitive applicant.

The October Employee of the Month is Leah Bigbee, Employer Relations & Marketing Specialist for UAB Career and Professional Development.

The Division helped make Homecoming a success and took home a prize
Thanks to UAB Student Involvement and Leadership, this year’s Homecoming event was a great success. Student Affairs staff from across the Division showed their Blazer pride in the gurney derby, tailgating, decoration contest and the list goes on.

Student Affairs staff work up a sweat and show some heart
About 30 members of the Student Affairs Division volunteered all day on Oct. 28 to help grout, paint and hang crown molding at the 3rd Annual UAB Benevolent Fund Habitat House.

Lunceford named new marketing specialist
The Student Affairs Department of Marketing and Communications is pleased to announce our newest team member: Malcolm Lunceford! Malcolm comes to us from UAB Campus Recreation, having been a part of the team since October 2014.

Welcome UAB’s new Director for Parent and Family Services, Meredith Kahl
Join us in welcoming Meredith Kahl as UAB’s new Director for Parent and Family Services. Kahl completed her undergraduate degree in Political Science and History at the University of South Carolina and went on to complete her masters in Higher Education Student Personnel at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss).

Bethany Tolar joins UAB Student Affairs as the Coordinator of Reservations and Events for Campus Recreation
Bethany Tolar is one of UAB’s newest faces, serving as the Coordinator of Reservations and Special Events. Bethany is responsible for scheduling the Campus Recreation Center, Campus Green, and West Campus Fields. She also is responsible for planning and coordinating all special events hosted by UAB Campus Recreation.

Martinez to lead Student Services at UAB
Patricia A.R. Martinez has been named assistant vice president for Student Services in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Martinez has more than 26 years of experience in service to students; most recently serving as acting executive director of Housing & Residential Life at Northern Illinois University.

UAB Student Affairs Leadership Team Gathers for Summer Huddle
Directors within the Division of Student Affairs met for their summer huddle on May 18th and 19th to discuss strategic planning updates and continue moving the division forward. Dr. Brian Hemphill joined the team to discuss the changing landscape of higher education and the implications of that change on student affairs.

Explore the US this summer with UAB Adventure Recreation
Want more out of your summer experience? UAB Campus Recreation is offering outdoor escapades through its Adventure Recreation's Outdoor Pursuits program. The three remaining trips for the 2015-2016 schedule include visits to Nantahala, Glacier National Park, and the Grand Canyon.

UAB’s Quang Do named 2016 White House “Champion for Change”
Quang Do, a student leadership staffer, is among a group of 10 people selected from across the country as “White House Champions of Change for Asian-American and Pacific Islander Art and Storytelling.” He will travel to Washington, D.C., for a two-day visit May 4-5.

Student Nurses’ Association wins Outstanding Student Organization at UAB’s Student Excellence Awards
The Student Excellence Awards honors UAB students and student organizations for their outstanding contributions to campus life in leadership and service. There are currently 256 registered student organizations on campus. This year, 112 nominations were submitted for the 15 award categories.
