Bicycles, scooters and other micromobility devices are common sights on campus at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. However, some may not know how to properly secure these devices.
UAB Police Department Capt. James Granade recommends that individuals take extra steps to prevent theft of micromobility devices.
Types of locks
Micromobility devices are small, wheeled vehicles for personal transportation, typically low-speed. These include electric and traditional scooters, bicycles, skateboards, and similar devices.
“It is essential for faculty, staff and students to always secure their bicycle or scooter when it will be left unattended for any amount of time,” Granade said. “A U-lock or another locking device is recommended.”
U-locks are heavy-duty metal locks shaped like a U. They use a crossbar locking system, where the crossbar connects to a U-shaped shackle and is secured with a key. These locks offer more security than most wire or cable locks, because they are more resistant to cutting with tools like bolt cutters.
Tracking the device
Granade recommends equipping micromobility devices with GPS, radio frequency identification or other trackers to increase the chances of recovering a stolen bicycle, scooter or other device.
Bicycle racks and lockers
Several bicycle rack locations are available on campus for parking micromobility devices. UAB provides an interactive map of bicycle parking and lanes for users to view when choosing where to park their devices. Users can check rack capacity by clicking on each parking location.
Another option for securing a bicycle on campus is to use the bicycle locker program at Lister Hill Library. The library has 22 bicycle lockers on the ground floor that can be rented out for $40 a semester.
“The lockers provide protection from theft and vandalism and offer a fully enclosed space to shield against weather conditions,” Granade said.
Safety
Riders should also take precautions to protect themselves by operating devices safely.
“Some general safety tips when riding a bicycle or scooter include obeying traffic laws, stopping at stop signs and red lights, yielding to pedestrians, and making eye contact to ensure drivers see you before entering an intersection,” Granade said.
Register your device
Students and staff can register their bicycle or scooter with UAB to increase the chances of recovery if it is stolen.
“If a student or staff member finds their bike or scooter missing from its secured location, they should contact UAB Police to file a report,” Granade said.
