U.S. Department of Education Campus Safety and Security data continue to show that UAB compares favorably in campus safety statistics to urban and non-urban campuses alike—from UCLA and Stanford to Duke, Emory, Rice, and Vanderbilt—and UAB continues to invest in people and tools to address potential threats and maintain a safe campus.
UAB’s emergency notification system is known as B-Alert, which communicates through voice calls, SMS text messages, and e-mails to students and employees all at once.
“We’ve relied upon the B-Alert system for many years now, and it has proven to be an effective means of sharing information that keeps our community informed and out of harm’s way,” said UAB Associate Vice President and Chief of Police Daryl Green, Ph.D. “We encourage all members of the campus community to make sure their B-Alert profile is always up-to-date.”
All BlazerID-connected UAB e-mail addresses are automatically included in the B-Alert system; phone numbers—including cell, office, and home phone numbers—may be added by updating the registration form found here.
Alerts that are appropriate for B-Alert include guidance about severe weather and its implications for campus operations. As a National Weather Service Storm Ready University, UAB also updates the UAB Severe Weather & Emergency Hotline (205-934-2165) as appropriate to provide official updates on the university's and UAB Hospital's opening and closing status. If UAB closes due to severe weather— announced via B-Alert with details at uab.edu/emergency—Green, Yellow, and Red work groups will be referenced. Green entities always close during weather cancellations. This group includes students, faculty, and non-essential staff. To learn your weather group, visit the Check your Group feature.
B-Alert also integrates with Facebook and Twitter. Employees and students should keep in mind UAB’s social media guidance regarding appropriate and responsible communication in an effort to accurately and sensitively deal with emerging situations.
