Aric Lyons, Class of 2027, was named the 2026 Armed Forces Optometric Society Student (AFOS) of the Year. An Army Health Professions Scholarship Program student commissioned in 2024, Lyons was recognized for his leadership, academic achievement and commitment to service.
For Lyons, the recognition reflects a lifelong commitment to service. From volunteer efforts in his hometown to an optometric mission trip to Jamaica and service with Equal Access Birmingham, serving others has remained a defining part of his journey.
“The underlying theme in every military optometrist’s story has been service to others.,” Lyons said. “I’m incredibly proud to represent this organization as a student and honored to receive this recognition.”
Lyons credits much of his dedication to service to the example set by his parents.
“My mom and dad have had the greatest influence on my journey,” he said. “Through their example, I learned from a young age that life is not just about myself. They encouraged me to find purpose in serving others.”
As he looks ahead to his career, Lyons hopes to combine the lessons learned through AFOS, military mentorship and his education at UAB to care for service members and their families while continuing to give back to the profession.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to begin my career in the Army and look forward to serving those who serve our country,” he said. “I also hope to give back to future students and young optometrists through mentorship, just as so many members of AFOS have done for me.”
Lyons’ selection as the 2026 AFOS Student of the Year reflects his dedication to service, leadership and the profession, highlighting his potential to make a lasting impact on patient care through military optometry.
