This is a newly created position for AOTF. Bowen will promote diversity, equality and inclusion in task force activities by reviewing documents and materials and ensuring efforts are inclusive.

“In this role, I will be able to help create an environment that respects and values all individuals and their differences,” Bowen said. “In addition, this role will be instrumental in promoting and fostering an organizational culture that diminishes bias and distinguishes and addresses general inequities, in order to prevent disadvantages for certain groups of people in Alabama.”

Bowen joined the Alabama Obesity Task Force, a volunteer membership organization that aims to improve health and reduce obesity in Alabama, in 2013. As a family nurse practitioner who serves low-income and minority populations and a researcher who studies successful aging and increasing physical activity, especially among vulnerable populations, the task force’s mission — “Working toward prevention and reduction of obesity for a healthier Alabama” — fit her goals and experience.

“I am excited about the opportunity to serve in the Equity and Inclusion Representative Position because I am professionally and personally a champion for equity and inclusion for all people,” Bowen said. “I actively strive daily to promote fairness and equity in every interaction and activity that I engage.”

Bowen is also a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) champion subcommittee member at the School of Nursing.

“On this task force, I look forward to working diligently to advocate for inclusiveness and equity for all people irrespective of race, age, color, disability, religion, national origin, citizenship, socioeconomic status and ethnicity (not all encompassing) in relation to any activity sponsored or supported by the Alabama Obesity Task Force,” Bowen said.
