University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Associate Professor and BSN-DNP Pathway in Nurse Anesthesia Coordinator Susan McMullan, PhD, CRNA, has been selected for the National League for Nursing’s year-long LEAD program, an initiative of the NLN Center for Transformational Leadership.

LEAD brings together cohorts of rising nurse leaders in both education and practice to examine organizational systems and leadership processes, focusing on strategic planning, building high performing teams, budgeting and developing a personal career plan to advance in organizational leadership. McMullan is one of 56 in her cohort, which comprises nurse educators chosen from colleges, universities and health care institutions from around the world.

As part of the program, McMullan will receive intensive one-on-one executive coaching and will attend online and live group coaching sessions, workshops and webinars. She attended an orientation session held February 12 and13, 2018 in Washington, D.C., and her LEAD cohort will return to Washington June 17 through 21 for the annual NLN Leadership Retreat.

McMullan joined the UAB School of Nursing in 2015. She developed a new nurse anesthesia doctoral curriculum and transitioned the Nurse Anesthesia Specialty Track from a Master’s Program to Doctor of Nursing Practice Program in 2017. Notably, the UAB School of Nursing’s 2017 MSN in Nurse Anesthesia Specialty Track graduating class achieved a 100 percent first-time pass rate on the National Certification Exam administered by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
