The accreditation is valid for four years, during which the agency retains all the privileges associated with this status.

“UAB Police Department is honored to receive this prestigious award from the CALEA Board of Commissioners,” said Daryl Green, UAB chief of Police. “This award symbolizes the high standard of excellence the department strives to maintain every day and is a testament of the department’s commitment to maintaining a safe campus.”

The accreditation process begins with a detailed self-assessment, during which organizations review their policies, practices and procedures against internationally recognized public safety standards. This is followed by an evaluation by independent assessors with expertise in public safety. Community feedback is collected during the process, and structured interviews are conducted with selected agency staff with relevant knowledge to assess the agency’s effectiveness and its overall ability to deliver services. A governing body of 21 commissioners makes the accreditation decision following a public hearing and a thorough review of all related documentation.

“Accreditation is a necessary process that helps us maintain a professional standard of policing,” said Deputy Chief Zandral Washington, who oversees UABPD’s CALEA accreditation process. “I am extremely proud of the work our agency has done in consistently meeting standards of excellence and providing a high level of service to the community.”

CALEA accreditation is an ongoing process, and to maintain its accredited status, an agency must consistently comply with CALEA standards. The next CALEA assessment will take place in 2029.
