The UAB Department of Pathology is excited to announce our chief residents for the 2025-26 year and thank our 2024-25 chiefs.
We want to acknowledge the incredible example that our 2024-25 chiefs Drs. Kyle Joseph, Caroline Stanek and Amy Theriault have set over the past year. They excelled in their leadership positions, and we thank them all for a job well done.
Our 2025-26 Chief Residents, effective Saturday, February 1, 2025, are:
Gian Piero Carames, M.D. – Chief Resident in Anatomic Pathology
Carames is currently completing his PGY3 AP/CP residency year and is a graduate of the Universidad del Norte, in Colombia. Carames will complete his fellowship in Cytopathology at the Cleveland Clinic after his residency in 2026-2027.
"I am deeply honored to have been selected as chief resident of Anatomic Pathology. This position will allow me to support my incredible co-residents and challenge myself to grow as a professional. I am excited to implement new ideas, initiatives, and points of view to improve our day-to-day at UAB. "
Anne Henry Hylander, D.O. – Chief Resident in Clinical Pathology
Hylander is currently completing her PGY2 AP/CP residency year and is a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. After her residency, she plans to pursue a fellowship in transfusion medicine.
"The role of chief resident is a privilege I will not take for granted. I am humbled to serve within a department that is deeply invested in its residents as well as in exceptional patient care. I look forward to working alongside my co-chiefs and leading our wonderful co-residents with commitment to these same values."
Alyssa Lee, M.D., M.S. – Chief Resident in Education and Outreach
Lee is currently completing her PGY3 AP/CP residency year and is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. After residency, she plans to pursue a fellowship in hematopathology.
"I am excited and honored to be named the next Chief of Education and Outreach. Education and advocacy are near and dear to my heart. I'm eager to work with the department to contribute to the personal and professional development of my peers while also strengthening outreach efforts within and amongst the pathology community."
In addition, we would like to announce the 2025-26 VOICE (vision, oureach, involvement, community and engagement) leaders, made up of the following:
Nicholas Eisele, D.O. - Resident Leader for Vision
This position serves to provide insight and feedback to the Program Evaluation Committee and program leadership to help meet goals and fulfill action items as determined by the Annual Program Evaluation. The role will also serve as the future-oriented leader of the resident group during committee meetings, such as the Resident Education Council.
Huda Haq, M.D. - Resident Leader for Outreach and Involvement
This position serves to highlight our residency program, events and residents on the department's established social media channels and newsletter by working closely with the UAB Department of Pathology's communications team to plan, develop and implement content. The role will advocate for the field of pathology as a career path through various education and outreach efforts.
Alexandra Wilson, M.D. - Resident Leader for Community and Engagement
This position serves to plan social events focused on building comradery, collegiality, work-life balance and overall wellness for the residents. The role will work closely with the Resident Leader for Outreach and Involvement and the Committee for Access and Engagement to highlight resident activities.
Each VOICE leader will work closely with the chief residents to develop inititatives for recruitment, the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Pathology Interest Group, medical student education and hosting students and scholars.
