Peter Anderson, D.V.M., Ph.D., a professor in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, received the 2025 Washington State University (WSU) College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research. The award honors outstanding alumni for their significant contributions to biomedical research, medicine, public health, education and veterinary medicine. The award ceremony was held March 22, 2025, at the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center at WSU.
Originally from a small town in northeastern Oregon, Anderson attended the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine before graduating in 1981 and participating in a veterinary and comparative postdoctoral pathology fellowship sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and offered jointly by the Auburn Veterinary College and the UAB School of Medicine. After completing his training in pathology and earning his Ph.D. in Experimental Cardiovascular Pathology at UAB, Anderson joined the UAB Department of Pathology as a faculty member.
Throughout his 44-year career at UAB, Anderson participated in numerous research activities in cardiac hypertrophy, ischemic injury, atherosclerosis and coronary stents, resulting in numerous publications and patents.
Anderson has received various student teaching awards over the course of his career, including the President's Award for Excellence in in Teaching for the Joint Health Sciences and the Ellen Gregg Ingalls/UAB National Alumni Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Teaching. He has been recognized with national and international teaching awards in the field of health professions education. In 2021, Anderson received the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Dean's Excellence Award in Teaching. He was named a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Medical Curricular Development and traveled throughout Africa and Taiwan to present faculty development workshops. Most recently, he was selected as a fellow in the Association of Acadamic Pathology Academy of Distinguished Pathology Educators.
In his nomination letter, Eason Hildreth, D.V.M., Ph.D., as assistant professor in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, said "Dr. Anderson is an internationally recognized leader in his field of research and education who has made significant local and global academic contributions since his graduation from Washington State University. It is an honor to have Pete as a colleague, mentor and friend."
Although recently retired, Anderson is continuing to contribute to the academic mission of the Department of Pathology by working on research collaborations, teaching, mentoring and overseeing the Pathology Education Instructional Resource (PEIR).
